The Music of the Night

Breaking Dawn Review Week hosted by Robmusement
Today's Topic: Music

The music used throughout Breaking Dawn part 1 made me extremely happy. I'd almost like to do a top 10 list but I'm afraid I would end up with six different songs tied for first. First let me just say that bringing back Carter Burwell, who did the music for Twilight, was probably one of the best decisions Bill Condon made in regard to this movie! There was too much music to discuss all of it here, so I'm just going to highlight some of my favorites borrowing a special wedding tradition that was given a few nods in the movie!
Something Old

Bella's Lullabye by Rob (just kiTTing) I know it was composed by Carter Burwell
Familiarity is big in this movie! The familiarity of Rob running his fingers along my neck the piano keys from Twilight had me whimpering even without seeing him play the piano this time around! I had thought that this music would be playing as Bella walked down the aisle. Okay, I was wrong. Having it just somewhere in the movie should have been enough, right?

Except, hearing this music while Edward first hears the baby's thoughts about DIED me. If I was someone who easily cried at sappy things in movies (which I am) I would have been totally crying here (and I was!)

And then I was in no way prepared for the awesomeness of the montage of Bella's memories set to her lullabye. Definitely one of my favorite parts of the movies. @17ForeverLisa had told me there was a part I would love and I did. We'll chat more about that another time.

From Now On by The Features
So this is a new song but has a very 80s feel--the song itself and the way it was incorporated into the movie! They packed SO MANY scenes into this song, admit it, it was A LOT like what has been done in an 80s movie!!! I was in heaven! The lyrics begin, "I dreamed last night about a time and place, where from our troubles we had escaped..." which just fit the beginning of the scene perfectly because 1) being on a special island with Edward is what we all dream about and 2) at the very end of the song is Bella's chess dream where she declares, 'I win' and goes in for her prize!

But before her dream, Edward was trying to evade Bella's advances, she's trying to get his attention with her nighties, and they were out having fun exploring the island. How much fun did that jump into the water look with this snappy and fun music in the background? Way better than that shiTTy New Moon cliff dive! It didn't leave any feathers swirling around the air but c'mon Bella, no other girl gets to do that on her honeymoon.

Though it is fast paced, don't underestimate the fact that this is a love song.
Something New
Turning Page by Sleeping At Last
This was probably the biggest surprise of the movie. The song is dramatic yet in such a simple and honest way. There could not have been a more perfect combination of music, lyrics, vocals, the understanding that this song was written from Edward's POV, and the scenes it was used for 1) Bella walking down the aisle with the dress reveal 2) During the lovemaking on the honeymoon, Bella reflecting on her night with Edward.

I want to kiss that guy who wrote the song! I cry from the first piano key pressed. #sap

It Will Rain by Bruno Mars
There was just an instrumental snippet of this song when Edward and Bella were walking outside to their honeymoon, which was interesting. The song itself wouldn't have fit here but my ears certainly perked up when I heard it. Again, familiarity is a running theme in this movie. And if you remember my post about how Eclipse needed a Musical Post-It note (Read here) well this song is it for Breaking Dawn! I hear this song on the radio and all I can think of is the movie and getting myself back to the theater to see it. This is the song the radio will play 5 or 10 years from now and it will stop me in my tracks and I'll think of my days spent blogging about Twilight and my love for this story.

1000 Years by Christina Perri
So as much as we talked about this song prior to the movie coming out, it turns out Mr. AnTwi-Pattz was right and it was just a 'credits song' but I'm sure it will make for a lot of lovely fan videos once we have more footage from the movie. I think the music is lovely, love that Christina Perri is a fan, and I wish it was played on the radio more than it is. I did hear it for about a week but then it fizzled. I've got big future plans for this song though that I'll talk about in another post.
Something Borrowed
All Yours by Kevin Teasely
This instrumental music was a reworked version of Metric's All Yours and was played when Edward and Bella left for the honeymoon in the car and then again when they were in the speedboat. It was ominous. It was anticipatory. It was all encompassing. And hey, between this music and the smooth purr of the Volvo S60, I could barely even hear the dog howling as they left the wedding.

This song was one of my favorite additions to the movie because I loved Metric's song as it played at the end of Eclipse. There was just so much certainty to it and helped in sealing the deal between Edward and Bella. So it was only fitting that it was part of the foreplay to Edward makin' good on his end of that deal!!! It started playing right about here just in case you had forgotten!

I still really love this song!!!

Flightless Bird, American Mouth (Wedding Version) by Iron and Wine
A slowed down version of the original song used in the prom scene of Twilight

"....have I found you flightless bird"

*pretend this spins*
Yes I absolutely was looking forward to a wedding version of this song, but I will say that I would have preferred it have been a 'first dance' song with the effect of everyone else fading away from them at that point. I mean have you ever really listened to all the lyrics?

With the vows and those lyrics it was almost like there was 'too much' going on all at once.  Part of what worked with the prom scene was the timing of the words spoken. There was no rush. There was a lot of time to feel the emotion and savor the jawporn. With the vows everything felt so fast. Some of the emotion of it was lost for me.

Something Blue

Love Death Birth by Carter Burwell

This music was all over the movie (as hisbella put it!) This music truly tells the journey of Bella including the music we heard when Bella and Edward were first in the meadow in Twilight , a bit of that sadness and loneliness she felt in New Moon to the reconciliation and everything that occurs in Breaking Dawn including the wedding (@ 1:45) , that leads up to the baby being delivered and finally her transformation, when we clearly hear the newer parts of this music playing.

So why do I have this listed under Something Blue you ask? Because it is emotional! Bella's journey to get to this point has been emotional, and this music is all so beautiful that it makes me sad. #sap But mostly, as the movie ends with Bella's transformation complete, it signals almost the end of the Saga Movies. And I feel blue just thinking about it!
Something Rob

Rob.
So he's not singing on this soundtrack.
Still, he's making some beautiful music in this movie
wouldn't you say?

Thanks so much for some extra help on this post from hisbellaMarie aka Naughty and Jeanette (Robmusement)! If you missed last night's convo about different scenes at Robmusement, go check it out here.

So tell me what was your favorite music in the movie?

I loved the music throughout the entire movie. TLR and I both said that we'll be purchasing the soundtrack.

I'm not the kind of person who picks up on the music during a movie, but I caught "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" right away. Probably because I FLOVE that song. "Bella's Lullabye" was never a favorite, but it was perfectly placed several times in this film.

All in all...I will give the music in the movie two thumbs, very high up!! :D

you just love quoting me don't ya? LOL

Great post! You were dead on with the music!

I so wish we could have all gotten together and watched it! Someday, we'll have a huge 12 mos reunion and watch them all!!!!

I love the angle you took with old, new, borrowed, and blue. My fave? Rob!

My favorite.. by far! was...

Turning Page

Everytime I listen to that song I cry.. There is something so pure about it's placement in the movie. Yes you hear the instrumental opening when Bella walks down the aisle.... but to here is again in her "flash back" of the wedding night just blew me away.

You nailed it when you said it was written from Edward's pov... and I think.. with it playing in the backround.. it was the moment Bella realized how much he truly did love her.. I think it was a growing up moment for her..when she realized that for him, it wasn't about her having that "human experience"...but about how much he loved her.

I'm not sure I am making sense.. but.. it's my favorite song in the film. When I get in my car and I play it, it brings tears to my eyes... this song IS their love, Bella and Edwards...for me at least.. and isn't that one of the things we all loved about these books.. not just the love story.. but the love Edward has for Bella.

When I grow up.. I want to be loved like that....like that song speaks about.... one day.

Thanks for the great job kiTT!!

Edward would be proud :)

kiTT...I FLOVE turning page - it quickly became my favorite song on the soundtrack for me and when I have the soundtrack on I find myself hitting repeat on that song more often than not...Ryan (the singer who goes by Sleeping at Last) really hit E's point of view and I think it's really special to have a guys love song that really tells his story. Ryan's Christmas album is available for FREE on noisetrade(dot)com. If you like turning page, go check it out - it's free, so what's the harm...and there are some beautiful songs on there - I really like this artist and the song...

Awesome post, kiTT - so true on all accounts! The music is always such a huge part of these movies. And a perfect post seeing as today is score release day... :)

Great post kiTT. The wedding symbols and how they relate to the songs, well so well put together.
I love Turning page is my first favorite, followed by 100years, Flightless Bird, but I have to hand it to Carter Burwell for tying it all together and giving us a big piece of Twilight back again.
This, for me, is the best sound track so far.

I only truly loved a few songs from the soundtrack. Turning Page, Flightless Bird (wedding version) and It Will Rain. I also love the instrumentals Eclipse All Yours and Love Death Birth. I think they got it right with the tie in to the other movies. And I cried like a sap every time they played Bella's lullaby. If they were going to play any song during the walk down the aisle other than the lullaby I would have wanted either Flightless Bird or Turning Page.

I'm not a music person but I know what I like and what I don't. When Bella is getting ready and the music is playing it made it seem campy and less frazzled nerves. Does that make sense?

However out of all of the things I could complain about on this movie the music would be a low priority.
"Why am I covered in feathers?" 0.2 seconds to say that! Come on Bill Condon, really!?!

So overall, it seems my favs were all of your favs! Pillows of a feather get ripped apart together. (or something like that)

@TwiWeasel, good deal! I'm getting the soundtrack for Christmas! yay us!

@hb, I do love quoting you! You've got good material to work with! lol

@ijm, *grins* glad you liked it! And if I got remarried there would be something Rob at my wedding. You can guess what that would be.

@Kelly, Oh I love your thoughts on TP and it being a moment of realization for Bella. Music makes you very insightful!

@Lauren, gld you liked! Thanks for the heads up on Ryan's other music to be found!

@BT, thank you! {{GASP}} did you say the best soundtrack so far even though no Rob on it??? I get it. It really is a great mix of music.

@Kassie, I love how we were all so affected by the music, especially Bella's Lullaby. I get what you mean about the Bella getting ready part. As for your last comment, let's file that under Why Bill C. needed a focus group to advise him in regard to this movie.

This ---> Still, he's making some beautiful music in this movie wouldn't you say?

And what a nice surprise with the last video of him speaking in (foreign) tongue. YUM!

Ok. Fine. You win. You definitely did a better music post than I ever could have. The wedding theme...the commentary...it all worked. *throws rice*

I hadn't listened to any of the songs on the soundtrack beyond It Will Rain and 1000 Years prior to going to LA for the premiere. So when the acts took the stage for the free concert, I was clueless. (Stop laughing, kiTT.) I was also busy walking around and getting my picture taken with a few people and didn't soak it all up. But one singer literally stopped me in my tracks. I loved the song immediately and had to ask someone who it was. Turns out it was Sleeping At Last with Turning Page. I even made took a picture of him singing because I wanted to remember it later.

I have always said that Bella's Lullaby should have been used in each of the movies to tie them all together with a common thread. It was such a huge part of Twilight. So, like you, I was thrilled when Carter Burwell was brought back on board for BD. It provided the bookend Bill Condon talked about for sure.

Sucks that ATP was right about 1000 Years being a credits song. Also sucks that It Will Rain wasn't featured more in the movie. I love both of those songs and they will take me back to a moment in time as well.

We were all hoping for that first dance. I was hoping for a father/daughter dance as well. (Charlie makes me cry the most. Billy Burke owns that role.) Flightless Bird would have been perfect for the first dance, as you said. But since we didn't get that, at least it was in there. Who knew there could be an even quieter version? It gives me goosebumps and I get the biggest lump in my throat listening to it. That song IS Twililght.

Ok. I'm rambling. Great post. Off to visit Kelly's and DJ's now.

Loved your take on the tunes kiTT! I think this soundtrack is tied with Twilight for me as my favorite! The guy from Sleeping at Last who wrote Turning Page is my new hero!!!

You know, I absolutely loved the 'What's old is new again' theme to the music in this movie! The remixing of old was a perfect way to sort of being to an end the Bella and Edward story, making them into one.

I would have loved to heard Iron & Wine as Bella danced with Jacob. He was her second love in a way, and it was sort of their last moment together... But that's just me.

Wonderful post, kiTT.

Hee hee, love the comment question.

Good post. I bought the soundtrack before the movie came out and didn't listen to it much. Can't explain. Hate "It Will Rain" and change the station whenever I hear it. Loved seeing & hearing Marketa Irglova in the new "Flightless" video. There's another song with a banjo or mando in it that I like but I don't remember which it is. Gotta give it more of a chance.

@Lisa, Using the lullaby to tie in all the movies would have been a great idea. I was watching live stream of the music at tent city and was also struck by Turning Page. A father/daughter dance would have been great. Fine. I brought it, and I won!

@UAB, sounds like we are all in agreement over Sleeping at Last.

@RPfangirl, perfect way to describe it! --->what's old is new again. Glad you enjoyed!

@Munkee, I knew you had something to say about the music! Wonder why 'It Will Rain' didn't click for you. Maybe it is too commercialized? I guess that is the good thing about this soundtrack, there is a variety on there so something for everyone!!
